Structured Products are individual investments designed to provide a fixed rate of return at a given point in the future. Just as there are many kinds of mutual funds, there are a wide variety of structured products currently available in the UK. Depending on their needs investors can select from a variety of products ranging from very simple income and growth plans to highly sophisticated investments which use derivatives and other financial instruments to create a capital return.

Different types of investment carry different levels of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Prior to making any decision to invest, you should ensure that you are familiar with the risks associated with a particular investment and should read the product literature. If you are in any doubt as to the suitability of a particular investment, both in respect of its objectives and its risk profile, you should seek independent financial advice

Structured Products are often considered as stand – alone investments and compared as direct alternatives to for example cash, equities or corporate bond funds. However structured products work best when used in conjunction with other investments where the defined return and capital protection can be used to balance the higher risk unprotected equity strategy of some portfolios. Structured Products can also be used to provide investors with access to more sophisticated asset classes such as commodities or international markets without investing directly into an individual stock or fund.

Structured Products are designed to payout on a given day in the future and as such are designed to be held until maturity. The fixed term nature does mean that these plans are not designed to be cashed in early however to say that your investment is locked away is not true. In most cases access to capital is possible prior to maturity date although any capital protection or fixed benefit is usually withdrawn.
